Mudeungsan was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018, and has selected as one of the top 100 Korean tourism destinations for 4 consecutive years. Seoseokdae and Ipseokdae are columnar joints that symbolize Mudeungsan Mountain, with a diameter of 1~2m and a height of 10~30m, providing colorful scenery. It is the only tourist attraction in the world where people can see columnar joints, found only in coastal areas, from the top of a mountain. Of particular note, Seoseokdae is sometimes called the ‘Crystal Screen of Seoseok’ because it sparkles with a strong light resembling a crystal as it reflects sunset rays.
In 2011, the May 18 Democratic Uprising documents were registered for world heritage records in UNESCO. In order to preserve the historical records of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, the May 18 Democratic Uprising Archives was established in 2015 and continues to collect, display, and study records. To this day, efforts are being made to spread the truth, free from distortion and derogation, of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, and work to investigate this truth is continuing.
